This past weekend, Stephen Hawking's allowed for his 1996 doctoral thesis Properties of expanding universes to be made available to the public for free. This move was reportedly so popular that the University of Cambridge's website received over 2 million hits, crashed multiple times, with users downloading the paper 60,000 times so far.
Previously to this it cost roughly $85 to purchase, but thanks to Hawking's wanting to "inspire people around the world to look up at the stars and not down at their feet,", you can download and read it on the University of Cambridge's websitefor free.
