Billboard To Change The Way Streams Are Counted Towards Recors Sales

Large

This past week's Hot 100 Billboard chart was again dominated by Post Malone's new single 'Rockstar Ft. 21 Savage', which achieved its position, atleast in part, thanks to a controversial Youtube loophole. Now Billboard has indirectly responded to the situation by adjusting how they weight different streams on their Hot 100 and Billboard 200 charts.

Instead of treating all streams as equal, the charts will now divided on-demand streaming into two categories, paid and unpaid. Streams for paid services like Apple Music and Spotify will have greater impact than services like Youtube or Spotify free accounts. These changes are also reflected in the album charts. While this be bad news for the Jake Paul's of the world, it will likely come as a welcome change to those that monitor and care for the music industry. You can read Billboard's full statement here.
